Vintage Caucasian Lenkoran Runner (Hallway rug), c1940
A marriage of two cultures, the Caucasian Lenkoran as shown by the central medallions and the ancient Persian Empire "Perspolise" monuments in the border.
The medallions called ‘Tosbaga’ which means tortoise with squares with double T motifs in between called ‘Sainak’ among human and animal figures framed by angular flowers border giving the carpet more depth as well as adding a subtle sense of movement. The weaver(s) took inspiration of tortoises from the nearby Caspian Sea. However you perceive it, its a beautiful old Lenkoran rug from the Caucasus.
