ATTRACTIVE VINTAGE TRIBAL LENKORAN (VAGIREH) RUG SAMPLER
Vagireh were sampler rugs. In the late19th / early 20th century, weavers were sometimes give vagireh, which contained all the element of design to complete a full rug, but they were woven in small sampler size.
Lenkoran
The medallions called ‘Tosbaga’ which means tortoise with squares with double T motifs in between called ‘Sainak’ among human and animal figures against an abrashed background framed by angular flowers border giving the carpet more depth as well as adding a subtle sense of movement. The weaver(s) took inspiration off tortoises from the nearby Caspian Sea. However you perceive it, its a beautiful old Lenkoran rug from the Caucasus. The brash in the field has produces a shifting depth of colour that creates an illusion of gently moving water in a deep lagoon. Circa 1930
